dated November 22, 1954: Pant for Central Cabinet

There are reports current in Lucknow that the U.P. Chief Minister, Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, has been finally prevailed upon to join the Union Cabinet. It is a near certainly that Pandit Pant will be given the Home portfolio in which case Dr. Katju may become the Defence Minister. Mr. Hafiz Ibrahim, Finance Minister of Uttar Pradesh, is also likely to join the Union Cabinet in the near future. It is not the first time that Pandit Pant has been requested to join the Union Cabinet, but hitherto all sections in U.P. were firmly opposed to his relinquishing office as he was considered indispensable for the State. The death of Rafi Ahmed Kidwai, however, has created a void at the Centre which, it is felt, calls for his presence in the Union Cabinet to strengthen the team.
