Vigyan Chetna Jatha comes to an end

By Our Staff Correspondent

SHIMLA, NOV. 21. After presenting its programme for over two months in all districts of the State except the snow-clad Lahaul and Spiti, the "Vigyan Chetna Jatha", organized by the noted voluntary organisation Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti, put up its final performance in the Himachal University auditorium here last evening. The Jatha which was undertaken to celebrate the "Year of Scientific Awareness- 2004" did 103 shows in 11 districts and 68 development blocks. It comprised 20 activists of the Samiti.

The large audience consisting of teachers, scientists, students and university employees was moved by the socially relevant themes presented by the activists. The street plays and the songs questioned the age-old beliefs and unscientific temperament in the society.

The main play "Jal, Jungle Aur Jamin" had the central character in "Antaryami", the man from Una who was made a hostage in Iraq recently. The issues of decreasing land holdings, fertility of agricultural land, unscientific and excessive chemicalisation, illegal green felling, decreasing water table and resources and privatisation of natural resources were raised by the Jatha artists amid applause by the audience.

Briefing about the programme, the Jatha tour coordinator Jianand Sharma said thousands of people were educated on relevant issues through street plays. A crowd of more than 6000 people attended the Jatha programme in Mandi town and a number of young men offered their voluntary services to the organisation and its activities.

The Himachal University Vice-Chancellor, L.R. Verma, offered his assistance to the organisation by providing resource persons to the future programmes. He offered coordination of the University Institute of Himalayan Studies with the Samiti programmes and projects.
