West Bengal
By Marcus Dam
KOLKATA, NOV. 21. Four companies of the India Reserve Battalion, specially trained to counter militancy in West Bengal, are being deployed in the three south-western districts where the Peoples' War (PW) which recently merged with the Maoist Communist Centre has a presence. This is part of a move by the State Government to step up the offensive against militants in the region. Earlier this week, a constable of the district's intelligence wing was shot dead by militants in the Lalgarh area of West Midnapore district. The incident occurred about 8 km away from where six jawans of the Eastern Frontier Rifles were killed in landmine blasts last month. The local police believe that there has been an increase in the number of PW activists entering the region from Jharkhand over the past few days. Among those entering are militants belonging to Andhra Pradesh. They form part of a squad of about 45 armed militants suspected to be hiding in the Belpahari forest in the district. Speaking to The Hindu , the outgoing Deputy Inspector General of Police, Midnapore Range, Anil Kumar, said that six persons had been arrested in connection with the killing of the constable.
