HASSAN, NOV. 21. The former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, has said that the country was facing a serious crisis owing to the degeneration of values in religious institutions, political systems, and the media. He has also said that it was imperative for social reformers to bail the country out of the crisis. Giving away the "Vatika Varshada Kannadiga" award instituted by E-TV channel to Veerendra Heggade of Srikshetra Dharmasthala here at a function organised at the district stadium on Saturday, Mr. Gowda said that it was time for people like Dr. Heggade to take the initiative for the integrated development of the country. Commending Dr. Heggade's efforts in addressing the basic problems that people in the rural areas faced, Mr. Deve Gowda said that he (Dr. Heggade) had proved that overall development was possible only when no returns were expected. He also said Dr. Heggade's path should be adopted as a model while envisaging a national programme to address issues that were plaguing the country. Mr. Deve Gowda, while complimenting the founder of E-TV, Ramoji Rao, said that he (Mr. Rao) should play a leading role in the development of the country and guide society on self-reliance. He also acknowledged the people's verdict in selecting Dr. Heggade for the annual award. He said that some social reformer should have been invited to give away the award instead of him.
`Unexpected' selection
After accepting the award, Dr. Heggade said that his selection was most unexpected. He said that Mr. Deve Gowda was among the many eminent Kannadigas who had made the land proud. Commending Mr. Deve Gowda's achievements, he said that ascending the top political position of a country was not easy and was possible only through service and sacrifices made for the welfare of the society. Creating a harmonious relationship between the people and Government would help in the development of the country, he added. Dr. Heggade also said that he would be indebted to the people of the State for selecting him for the prestigious award and assured the people that he would live up to their expectations. The in-charge of E-TV, Kiran, said that Dr. Heggade had been chosen by the many of viewers of the channel. Playback singers including, S.P. Balasubramanyam, Chitra, Hariharan, and Usha Uthup, performed at the function.
