Power will reach all villages soon, says Sayeed

ALUVA, NOV. 21. The Union Power Minister, P.M. Sayeed, has said that power will reach all the villages of the country by the end of the Tenth Plan period.

Addressing a function at Nedumbassery near here today, Mr. Sayeed said that the ongoing rural electrification project, aimed at ensuring smooth power supply in 125,000 villages, would be completed by 2009.

The Union Minister said that as part of the project, one 11 kv transformer would be installed in every village having about 3,000 people and every block would have a 33.11 kv sub-station to ensure smooth distribution of power.

Power generation in the country had gone up to 116,000 MW now from the 1,362 MW capacity at the time of Independence, he said.

The Union Minister said that the country could be self-sufficient in the power sector by regularising usage and avoiding misuse.

Replying to a demand by the local leaders, he said that he would exert pressure on the Centre to reopen the Haj embarkation point at the Cochin International Airport. - UNI
