BJP for CBI probe into sex scandals

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 21. The BJP has reiterated its demand for an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into sex scandals and `hawala' transactions in the State.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at a meeting of State-level functionaries of the party here today.

Briefing mediapersons on the deliberations at the meeting, the State president of the BJP, P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, said it had been decided to intensify the agitation demanding the ouster of the Minister for Industries, P.K. Kunhalikutty, from the Cabinet.

The meeting chalked out a time-bound action plan to mobilise public opinion in the State in support of this demand.

Agitation

The party has just completed the first stage of agitation demanding the Minister's removal. The next phase will be launched at Kozhikode on November 27; a rally will be held to highlight the issue. Similar conventions will be held at Kochi and Kollam on November 28 and 29, respectively.

O. Rajagopal, senior BJP leader, will lead a rally in all the 140 Assembly segments; it will start at Manjeswaram on December 3 and end at Thiruvananthapuram on December 16.

On December 8, women, under the banner of the Mahila Morcha, will undertake a 24-hour fast in front of the Secretariat. Collectorate marches would be held in all the districts on December 21, Mr. Sreedharan Pillai

said.

He accused the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, and the Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, of trying to protect the "so-called VIP" allegedly involved in the Kiliroor sex scandal.

Mock fight

Even though both of them knew who the VIP was, the name has not been revealed owing to political reasons.

As in the Kozhikode sex scandal, in the Kiliroor incident too, the United Democratic Front and the Left Democratic Front were engaged in a mock fight. They were helping each other, he alleged.

Through another resolution, the BJP asked the State Government to reduce local tax levied on petroleum products. Kerala, being a consumer State, was the most affected by the recent hike, he said.

The State president described as `baseless' reports about discord in the top leadership of the party in the State.

The absence of two senior leaders, C.K. Padmanabhan and P.P. Mukundan, at today's meeting was owing to personal reasons, he said in reply to a question.

Senior BJP leaders organised a `dharna' at Gandhi Park in the city in the morning, demanding release of the Kanchi Acharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, from jail without further delay. L. Ganesh, all-India secretary of the BJP, inaugurated the dharna.

Later in the day, the leaders visited a woman from Pappanamcode who have been admitted to a Government hospital here. She has alleged that she was molested by a gang of three youths believed to be politically hostile to her son who is jail following inter-party rivalry. They demanded stringent action against the guilty.
