CK Naidu statue

Sir,_Last year, the president of Andhra Cricket Association (ACA), K.V. Rao, announced that the ACA had taken a decision to install a bronze statue of Col. C.K. Naidu at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Pothina Mallayyapalem on the outskirts of the city. It is a long time since the decision was announced but the statue is not installed yet.

Can the president or the secretary of ACA throw any light on this?

Bhoomi pooja

Sir,_The `Boomi Puja' photo published on November 9 in The Hindu prominently showed the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, wearing his chappals while touching the sacred puja area.

The priest who conducted the puja under Vedic rituals is either ignorant or cared only for money. In any case, the priest has deliberately failed to respect the Hindu religious culture, system and beliefs of Hindus. As such he is unfit for the rituals and should be debarred from his profession for his serious, gross negligence which hurt the sentiments of many Hindus.

Leaders--political or others--who may be asked to do puja at public functions should refrain from wearing chappals on the occasion.

A nuisance

Sir,_The beautiful beach road is used by several people for morning stroll. While walking on the footpath between Visakha `Taj Mahal' and Girijan Cooperative Corporation (GCC) office, one finds the slum dwellers in the vicinity using the footpath for open defecation. The walkers are forced to step down and move away repelled by the stench.

Also, the footpath near the GCC is encroached by coconut vendors and a tea and snacks stall. Recently, a retired Motor Vehicle Inspector who got down the footpath to avoid the excreta was hit by a motor-cyclist and died on the spot. Even the top officials of the VUDA and Corporation are seen passing on the same road but never seemed bothered by the stench.

In fact, the Sanitary Inspector and his staff who clean the beach road every day also carefully avoid the dirty footpath. Will the authorities concerned respond?

Phone bill payment

Sir,_Residents of the industrial area were in the habit of making payment of telephone bills either in the Industrial Estate Post Office (IEPO) or at the Telecom centre at Marripalem which are within reach. But the Telecom centre has been closed permanently and now all have to depend on IEPO where there is no computer. The work is done manually and there are serpentine queues witnessed in front of the IEPO. Will the Telephones department entrust the work to eSeva centres which would be more convenient to the public?

Temple entry

Sir,_Recently some of my relatives from Kerala were here and visited temples like Kanakamahalakshmi temple and Simhachalam.

They were shocked when they were forced to purchase entry ticket for darshan. There is no such system even at famous temples of Guruvayur, Sabarimala, Chottanikkara, Vaikom, and Padmanabhaswami temple in Kerala. I request the State Government also to follow the same for the benefit of the devotees.

Interest on property tax

Sir,_Levy of interest up to 24 per cent per annum on property tax arrears is not justified. It is suggested that the example of Delhi Municipal Corporation be followed in this context.

The DMC is giving a rebate of 15 per cent to the prompt tax-payer if he paid the annual tax in one go before the commen- cement of the year within one month.

Alternatively, he can pay the amount in four quarterly instalments. However, in the latter case, he will not get any rebate. In case of default, he will be liable to pay penal interest at one per cent on default amount till the payment. Such approach is workable and our State Government must adopt the same.

Kakinada
