Tirupati
By Our Special Correspondent
TIRUPATI, NOV. 21. The Chennai-bound Sapthagiri Express was detained at the Tirupati railway station by BJP and Sangh Parivar activists protesting against the remanding of Kanchi Sankaracharya to police custody. Chanting slogans and wielding placards and party flags, the demonstrators denounced the arrest and dubbed it a "deep conspiracy" hatched by the UPA and the Tamil Nadu Governments to denigrate a popular institution like Sankara Mutt as part of its vote bank politics aimed at garnering Muslim votes.
Appeal for fasting
In a related development, the Srikaryam and the agent of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, P. Neelakanthan in a statement issued here today appealed to the disciples and devotees of the mutt to observe fast tomorrow on the eve of `Karteeka Somavaram' to propitiate Lord Siva to save Hinduism and the Kanchi seer from the "present travails". The Srikaryam also struck a note of optimism that the seer would come out of the crisis unscathed with all his `pristine pure image.'
