Motor workers to strike work

Thiruvananthapuram Nov. 21. Motor workers throughout the district will strike work and take out a march to the Raj Bhavan here on Wednesday as part of a nation-wide agitation to protest the fuel price hike. In a press release issued today, the Sponsoring Committee of Trade Unions termed the Central Government decision to increase the price of petrol, diesel and cooking gas as anti-democratic. It said the price hike had come at a time when the international price of crude oil was going down. The Raj Bhavan march will start from the Martyrs' Column at Palayam, the release said.

Interactive session

KOZHIKODE NOV. 21. The Malabar Chamber of Commerce (MCC) will organise an interactive session with Ashok K. Attri, Ambassador of India- designate to Sultanate of Oman at the P.V. Sami Memorial Hall, Chamber house here on Monday.

The session will explore the possibilities for the promotion of bilateral trade, business and industry between India and Sultanate of Oman, MCC secretary P.G. Anoop Narayanan said in a press release here today.

Shifting to new premises

The Federal Bank Kozhikode Regional office will be shifted to the bank's own premises `Federal Towers' near Arayidathupalam on Mavaoor Road on November 22. The chairman of the bank, K.P. Padmakumar, will inaugurate the building. The three-storeyed building comprising 19,000 sq.ft. is equipped to provide better banking facilities, said Abraham M. Thomas, deputy general manger Kozhikode region. The Mavoor Road branch of the bank with ATM as well as the service branch will start functioning on the inaugural day itself. The bank will also have a new currency chest in the premises on the ground floor.

Seminar

Thrissur Nov. 21. A three-day seminar organised here as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan urged the Government to make Sanskrit the national language of the country. A resolution adopted at the seminar said the potential of Sanskrit should be tapped in such a manner that it caters to the requirements of the modern age. Addressing the valedictory function, L.M. Singhvi, MP, countered the demand, saying it was not practical. "When the Constitution was framed, there was hardly anyone who insisted that Sanskrit should be made the national language. I don't think it will be possible now," he said.

Pulse Polio drive

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM NOV. 21. As part of the national Pulse Polio immunisation drive, 28,78,242 children below the age of five were administered oral polio vaccine on Sunday. The Health Services has thus covered 97.7 per cent of the target group. The target group of children who were to be immunised was 29,46,000. Health workers would make house visits on November 22 and 23 in order to administer the vaccine to those who were not covered under the programme on Sunday, the Director of Health Services, B. Mahilamani, said.

KSRTC casual workers' plea

The KSRTC Casual Labour Organisation has demanded that casual workers be confirmed in service. In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, the president of the organisation, Kattakada Christopher, said casual workers of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KRSTC) received the lowest of wages among workers in the public sector. Those who had put in a minimum of 240 days of service should be confirmed.

KGOA strike plan

The Kerala Gazetted Officers Association (KGOA) said here on Sunday that it would soon call for a strike by State Government employees to press for pay revision and interim relief. The association general secretary, K. Sivakumar, said the Government had been ignoring its demands. Hence there was no option, but to go on strike.

Karunakaran hospitalised

The senior Congress leader, K. Karunakaran, was admitted to the Medical College hospital (MCH) on Sunday evening after he complained of "uneasiness". Mr. Karunakaran will be kept under observation at the Cardiology Intensive Care Unit tonight. His condition is stable and satisfactory. He would be shifted to the VVIP room on Monday, the MCH Superintendent, N. Viswanathan, said.

Tea estate to reopen soon

The Padhoor Tea Estates in Wayanad will reopen soon. An agreement on this was reached at a conference of estate owners and labour unions held in the presence of the Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran, and the Labour Commissioner, S. Sreenivasan, in Aluva. An official release said here on Sunday that the Poothakolli and Perumthatta I and II divisions would reopen on December 6 and the Elson division on January 10. According to the agreement, the workers will try to increase productivity to the maximum.

Walk-in interview

at NIT-C

KOZHIKODE NOV. 21. The National Institute of Technology-Calicut (NIT-C) will conduct a walk-in interview on December 1 to fill the posts of three lecturers at the Department of Computer Engineering on an ad hoc basis. The minimum qualification required is a first class in B.Tech. Computer Science and Engineering/ Information Technology or equivalent.
