Treat him with respect

Sir, — While the Sangh Parivar seems to be demanding complete immunity for the Acharya, the Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu want to treat him like a criminal.

Between the divide is the majority, which feels the Seer should be treated with respect and dignity.

Anand John Samuel,
Vellore, T.N.

Sir, — In Tamil Nadu, major political parties are vying with one another to establish their atheistic credentials by exploiting the issue. The Acharya has been convicted even before the evidence has been weighed by the courts of law.

M.S.S. Subrahmanyam,
Hyderabad

Sir, — The Seer has already been pronounced guilty by some. They seem to know exactly whom he hired to kill Sankararaman, how much he `offered' them and so on. While there is no denying the facts, only God seems to know the facts.

V. Subramanian,
Bangalore

Sir, — The arrest should not be allowed to snowball into major unrest. The Sankaracharya should be treated with dignity and respect.

Susamma Thomas,
Kollam, Kerala

Sir, — Sending him to police custody was avoidable.

A religious head of a revered institution need not have been denied a few privileges on the ground that he was an "undeserving criminal."

Sir, — In a State where we have seen drama in court rooms involving celebrities who fall unconscious on hearing the verdict and are shifted to five star hospitals, the Seer can be given better treatment.

S. Harikumar,
Agra, U.P.

Sir, — Those who are saying everyone is equal in the eyes of the law are doing so only to justify the arrest of the Acharya.

All of us know only too well that corrupt politicians and high officials are above the law.

Ramesh Raman,
Washington

Sir, — Why do the police require the Acharya's custody if they have all the proof to incriminate him?

K. Nirmala Krishna,
Hyderabad

Sir, — At a time when witnesses are changing their testimony at the drop of a hat due to pressure, does it not appear premature to criticise Sri Jayendra Saraswathi?

Shanker Trivedi,
Ontario, Canada

Sir, — Why does a contract killer need 17 persons to plot and execute the murder of a middle- aged man, who is practically unprotected?

And if even to pay a contract killer, money has been withdrawn from the bank where is the question of the Mutt having unaccounted money?

Abdul Kareem,
Chennai

Sir, — It is preposterous to assume that Sankararaman was killed because of personal vengeance by the Seer.

N. Ramakrishnan,
Chennai

Sir, — There is no denying that `Sankararaman dead' is more fierce than `Sankararaman alive.'

R. Gopalan,
Chennai
