BIDAR, NOV. 21. The former Minister H. Vishwanath said on Sunday that feudalistic forces in the Congress had alienated some castes and communities from the party. "We need to win back the confidence of these communities to strengthen the party," he added. Mr. Vishwanath, who was here to participate in meetings to thank members of various communities for their support to the Congress in the byelections, was addressing presspersons. He said the powerful communities within the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes, backward classes and minorities had been enjoying power in the Government or in the party.
Deprived of power
He said some sections in these communities were deprived of power. He had stated this in public earlier and had even raised the matter with the party High Command. Now, the party was making efforts to win the support of these communities. The Congress won the Bidar byelection by consolidating its traditional vote bank that included minorities and sub-castes among the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes and backward classes. The party regarded this as a successful experiment and a lesson. Such experiments would be replicated elsewhere, he said.
Meetings
Mr. Vishwanath said that he would organise such meetings across the State. "We will not only interact with the neglected communities but also ensure that they enjoyed political power in the future," he said. He described as anti-democratic the relay hunger strike by the leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including L.K. Advani, against the arrest of the Kanchi seer.
`Misleading public'
Mr. Vishwanath accused Vishweshwa Teertha Swami of Pejavar Mutt of misleading the public on the Udupi Krishna Temple management. The swamiji had been maintaining that the temple belonged to a particular community, the former Minister said.
