PONDICHERRY, NOV. 21. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, said here today that 7,500 poor families had been given Rs. 40,000 each as subsidy to enable them to raise concrete houses. Another batch of 7,500 families would be covered in the next phase from December. Addressing fishermen on World Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Day here today, he said he was hopeful that the Rs. 37 crore fishing harbour would be built in Karaikal soon. Mr. Rangasamy handed pensions and insurance policy amount to familiess which had lost their main breadwinners under Jansree Bheem Yojana (insurance scheme). He said the administration would provide a subsidy of Rs. 2.90 a litre of diesel used by the fishermen in their crafts. The Pattali Makkal Katchi Parliamentary Party leader, M. Ramadoss, said he would place before the Central Government the grievances of fishermen of Pondicherry.
The Local Administration Minister, A. Elumalai, in charge of Fisheries presided. The Deputy Speaker, A.V. Subramanian, highlighted various schemes of the Department of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare.
