BANGALORE, NOV. 21. The Mobile Exhibition project launched by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) is aimed at educating small-scale industries about problems related to pollution. According to M.N. Jayaprakash, Senior Environment Officer, KSPCB, the State has 2,69,225 small-scale industries that contribute 35 per cent to exports, 40 per cent to production and create 45 per cent employment opportunities. However, industrialisation has brought with it a range of problems right from the stage of raw material production and transportation to the final product. Every stage is associated with some form of pollution. Release of effluents, gaseous emissions, foul odours, sound of heavy machinery, noise because of various production processes and unhygienic working conditions are some of them. The project will help create awareness among small-scale industries about various environmental issues relating to efficient utilisation of available resources, cleaner production and waste minimisation techniques to be adopted, energy consumption, conservation and alternative energy resources and technologies to be used. Air and water pollution caused by industries, its effects on the health of human and other living beings, treatment plants for industrial effluents and schemes to support small-scale industries for their improvisation and proper maintenance will also be dealt with.
Components
The main components of the project are the general features of the State's industries and their contribution, problems of small-scale industries, resource depletion and environmental pollution, major pollutants of selected small-scale industries, occupational health hazards and measures to reduce industrial pollution.
