MYSORE, NOV. 21. The residents of Mysore took to the roads this morning to take part in the 21.1-km marathon. The marathon, organised by Katte Sports and Cultural Association, began at 5.45 a.m. from the Maharajas College grounds. The participants passed through Ramaswamy Circle, Gun House, Hardinge Circle, K.R. Circle, Devaraj Urs road, K.R.S Road, Vani Vilas Mohalla, Open Air Theatre, Bogadi Road, Kuvempunagar, Ramakrishna Nagar, and Kantharaj Urs Road, before returning to the Maharajas College grounds. The run, "Katte Marathon-2004," concluded at 9.45 a.m. Drinking water and energy drink stalls had been set up at several locations on the marathon route for the benefit of the runners. Runners from Mysore, Mandya, Bangalore, Dharwad, and Shimoga participated in the event. A large number of people had gathered on the roads to cheer the participants.
Winners
Balakrishna G. Avalakki from Bangalore secured the first place in the men's general category by clocking a time of one hour, eleven minutes and 59 seconds. He was followed by Ramesh Poojar of Bangalore (one hour, fourteen minutes and 56 seconds), and Royappa from Dharwad (one hour, fifteen minutes and 56 seconds). In the women's general category, Shanti Kumari of Mysore bagged the first prize by clocking two hours, forty-seven minutes and 56 seconds. The second prize went to Nandini Gopinath, who had come down from the US. She timed three hours, one minute and 28 seconds. Krishnamma from Mysore won the third place by clocking a time of three hours one minute and 36 seconds. In the senior citizen's category (above 55 years of age), a retired Sub Inspector of Police from Mysore, K.L. Patil, won the first place by clocking one hour, thirty-four minutes and 15 seconds. Mr. Patil has won the prize for the third consecutive year. The second and third places were bagged by Kumaraswamy and Shankar Rao respectively.
Under-15 category
In the under-15 boys category, Yadunandan came first by clocking one hour, forty-seven minutes and 15 seconds. The second and third prizes were bagged by Charan and Udayaravi. Charan clocked two hours and Udayaravi clocked two hours and ten seconds. In the handicapped persons' category, the first prize went to Priyanka. The second prize went to Jayanth Srinivas, a partially blind person. Pushpa bagged a special prize in the ryhandicapped persons category. Certificates of participation were given to all participants by Srirangan Thathachary, chief patron of the Katte Sports and Cultural Association. The staff of the BGS Apollo Hospital and Gopala Gowda Shanthaveri Memorial Hospital provided medical care to the participants.
