Ram Babu works to fulfil a dream

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, NOV. 21. Seeking to fulfil the promise made to the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, almost four years ago, the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, Ram Babu Sharma, has kicked off construction work on Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan on Deen Dayal Upadhaya Marg that will house the office of the Delhi Congress and will have several other facilities.

Incidentally, Ms. Gandhi had laid the foundation stone of the project on August 20, 2000, amid much fanfare and promises that it would be completed for inauguration within a short period of time. However, even four years after laying of the foundation stone of Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, not a single brick had been placed at the site till recently. The only thing that happened all this time was digging of an underground tube-well.

A six-storey building has been planned at the site that was to house the offices of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee and its various wings including the Youth Congress. There is also a provision for construction of a state-of-the-art auditorium and a guesthouse in order to provide accommodation facility to visiting Congressmen from other States. The entire project is expected to cost around Rs. 1.50 crores. Interestingly, the former DPCC president, Subhash Chopra, had even collected funds for construction of the building and was instrumental in getting all the plans approved.

"A payment of Rs. 20 lakh has already been made to the contractor for starting work at the site. Funds would not be allowed to come in the way of construction of the building and the Congressmen of Delhi will celebrate Diwali next year in the new office,'' the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, Ram Babu Sharma, said. He said that coupons in the denominations of Re. 1 to Rs. 1,000 were being printed to collect funds for the building. All the Congress workers and leaders are keenly working to collect funds for this building and whatever money required would be made available. Those interested in contributing to the construction of Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan can approach the Congress office in Delhi and deposit funds after getting a proper receipt, he added.

The previous DPCC presidents had failed to take any interest in getting work on the building going and this could be attributed to the fact that both the party and the Government hardly ever saw eye to eye in recent years and the strong differences prevented any kind of concrete action being taking in this direction.
