CHENNAI, NOV. 21 . The International Film Festival of Tamil Nadu-2004 will be held here from November 26 to December 1. This is the first competitive film festival being organised in the city, and will be jointly hosted by the International Tamil Film Academy (ITFA) and Seventh Channel. India is the one of the largest film producing countries generating over 800 films annually. Tamil Nadu enjoys a major share in the numbers produced. Last year, the State produced 102films. However, despite being a major film-producing centre, the State does not really have a film movement. The festival has been planned to fill the gap between the film-loving public and the industry. Seventh Channel owner and Festival Director Narayanan says: "Our concern has organised various events in different parts of the world such as Singapore, Malaysia and South Africa. We have showcased our culture in other parts of the world and now we want to bring their films to our people."
50 films
The festival will bring around 50 films from 30 countries. "But we are going to conduct the festival only for five days at Pilot theatre. So we can only show 25 films, which will be shortlisted by a selection committee. As the host country two films are going to be from India, of which, one will be a Tamil film," says Mr. Narayanan.
Five-member jury
A five-member international jury has been constituted to select the best film, best director, best actor, best actress and popular film. One of its members is from Sri Lanka, another from Germany and the rest are from India. Tamil actors, including Parthiban, Cheran, Sneha and Vivek will give their opinion on the films in writing to be forwarded to the jury for the selection of the best popular film of the festival. Mr. Narayanan is happy that nearly all the countries that were approached are sending their films at the festival. "One can very rarely see films from China (two), Iceland, Thailand and Philippines. We also have films from France, Italy (two), Germany (four ), the United States (seven), Philippines (two) and Japan. We intend to accommodate as many countries as possible." Several films are award winners. The notable films include "Bread and Tulips" from Italy, "Nachbarinnen" from Germany, "Tangin Yaman" from Philippines, "Beneath the Skin," and "Noi Albinoi" from Iceland. The "inaugural film" will be from the People's Republic of China, "Together." Donor passes can be collected from the Seventh Channel- 28113311, 28114022.
