MANGALORE, NOV. 21. A national seminar on "Emerging trends in literary theory and research" will be held at the Department of English of St. Aloysius College here on November 26 and 27. The event is part of a series being conducted on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the college. Eugene Lobo, Principal of the college, told presspersons here on Saturday that the seminar would involve lectures by eminent scholars in the country. It was for the first time that a national seminar on literary theory and research was being organised in an undergraduate college in the State, he added.
Globalisation
"Literary theory has generated much interest in academic circles in the wake of the increased cross-cultural encounters brought out by rapid globalisation. In this context, literary theories coming from not only different parts of the world but also from historical contexts have posed challenges to all concerned with literature,'' said Ratan T. Mohunta, organising secretary of the event. Mr. Mohunta said it was becoming difficult to divide theories into western and native ones. The confusion created by these developments had necessitated a clarification on the same. The seminar was an attempt to address this need and offer conceptual clarification, he added.
Series
The seminar is the second in a series organised by the department. Last year, a national seminar on "Perspectives in English language teaching" was held. The coming seminar is open to teachers of literature, research scholars and those interested in literature and literary theory, according to Lourdusamy, convener of the event. The panel of speakers includes Magdalene Abraham, senior lecture, Department of English, Fatima College, Madurai; Cheriyan Alexander, Professor and Head of the Department of English, St. Josephs College; Sripad Bhat, Professor and Head of the Department of English, Goa University, and so on. C.N. Ramachandran, Professor-Emeritus and former Chairperson, Department of Postgraduate Studies and Research in English, Mangalore University, will deliver the keynote address at the inaugural function. For details and registration, call 98803 15816 or contact the organising secretary, St. Aloysius College, Mangalore. Teachers of English from Mangalore University-affiliated colleges will be granted off-on-duty by the Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Mangalore Region, for attending the seminar.
