BANGALORE, NOV. 21. Jagadish Shettar, president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State unit, today led his colleagues and senior leaders in a satyagraha and fast in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi here to protest against the arrest of the Sankaracharya of Kanchi Math, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi. His predecessor and BJP general secretary, H.N. Ananth Kumar; the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, D.H. Shankaramurthy; Ramachandra Gowda, M.R. Tanga, Aravind Limbavali and Shobha Karandlaje, MLCs; R. Ashok, MLA; and party workers participated in the protest. All the leaders observed a fast from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The dharna was in response to the call given by the party's national leadership. The BJP president, L.K. Advani, and former Union Minister Murli Manohar Joshi took turns to lead a satyagraha in New Delhi over the weekend.
ABVP supports bandh
Our Udupi Staff Correspondent reports: The Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarti Parishad (ABVP) Udupi city unit has supported the bandh call given by the VHP and Bajrang Dal to protest against the arrest of the Kanchi Acharya. In a press release issued here on Sunday, Roopesh, secretary of the ABVP Udupi city unit, said the action of the Tamil Nadu Government against the Sankaracharya was unwarranted.
Appeal for support
The BJP has appealed to the people of the State to support the "Bharat Bandh" called on Monday by the Vishva Hindu Parishad in protest against the arrest of Jayendra Saraswathi. Mr. Shetty appealed to the public, the business community and industry to observe the bandh. Mr. Shettar said the party would support the VHP in observing the bandh. On Monday, Mr. Yediyurappa and Mr. Shankaramurthy will be staging the "satyagraha" near the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. According to party sources, they expected good response to the Bandh in coastal and north Karnataka in particular.
