VIJAYAWADA, NOV. 21. The District Collector, K. Prabhakara Reddy, on Sunday complimented the officials of the Medical and Health Department and various voluntary organisations for their efforts to make the pulse polio programme a grand success in the district. The Collector, who formally launched the 10th phase of the pulse polio programme at Sheik Raja Saheb Municipal Maternity Hospital this morning by administering polio drops to a few children, said that the district administration took steps to administer the drops at 22,000 centres spread throughout the district. The number of children expected to take the drops was estimated at 3.71 lakhs in the district of which 75,000 children were from the city alone. Necessary steps had also been taken to ensure that the staff members approached the children, particularly those residing in the slums, who could not come to the pulse polio centers. The Vijayawada city Mayor, Panchumarthi Anuradha, the Vijayawada West MLA, Sheik Nasarvali, Municipal Commissioner, V. Usharani and others also participated in the event.
