ISLAMABAD, NOV. 22. The former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who has been in jail for over eight years in connection with several cases, was granted bail today.

The Supreme Court granted him bail in the BMW import duty case, the last of several cases, after several adjourned hearings and hours of arguments.

The development has triggered speculation of secret negotiations between Mr. Zardari and the Generals because the President, Pervez Musharraf, needs Mrs. Bhutto's cooperation as the Opposition has threatened to take to the streets if he does not shed uniform by December 31.

Mr. Zardari and the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) denied rumours of a `deal.'

"I have spent 8 years in jail and there is no reason for me to strike a deal now," A three-member bench of the apex court set Rs. 1 million as bail amount and ordered his release. As Mr. Zardari was expected to be released, Mrs. Bhutto said, "Asif deserved to be released, legally and morally. He could have been released much earlier if it was through a deal."
