Musharraf's statement

Sir, — This refers to the statement by the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, that Islamabad will not give up its maximalist position on a plebiscite and the implementation of U.N. resolutions unless New Delhi meets it halfway. India, for its part, has made it clear that it is not for re-drawing the borders.

Then why do the countries have to go on with the discussion on Kashmir?

J. Anand Joel,
Chennai

Sir, — Any progress on the Kashmir issue will have to be based on a policy of give and take. The General's suggestion on redrawing the boundaries smacks of unilateralism.

R. Anuradha Rajappa,
Batlagundu, T.N.

Sir, — Kashmir is an integral part of India. Although some give and take is necessary for a peaceful bilateral settlement, it is not correct for Islamabad to challenge the integrity and sovereignty of our nation.

K.P. Ashok Kumar,
Thiruvananthapuram
