Hopes alive on intelligence bill

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

Washington: There is still hope in some Congressional circles that lawmakers could pass in December the intelligence overhaul bill that flopped in the House of Representatives on Saturday in the final moments. "For us to do the bill in early December it will take significant involvement by the President and the Vice-President. It will take real focus on their part," said the Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist. The bill fell through after Conservatives felt the provisions were harmful to the military especially on the battlefield; and at least one senior Republican lawmaker insisted on tightening immigration procedures. The White House is said to have worked on lawmakers but not enough to have the legislation on the lines of what delegates in the House and Senate had agreed upon. And the word is that the President, George W Bush, has a very high priority in getting the bill through Congress.
