`Normality has returned to Sagar'

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA, NOV. 22. The Superintendent of Police, Arun Chakravarthy, on Monday said the situation in Sagar town, which witnessed communal disturbances in the past seven to eight months, had returned to normality following the measures taken by the police.

Addressing a press conference here, he said after arresting some anti-social elements in connection with the incidents, a special team had been formed to keep a tab on the goings on, though on a low profile, in Sagar town.

Besides, several persons had been taken into preventive custody after peace committee meetings were held to prevent anti-social elements from taking advantage of the situation during peaceful demonstrations, he said. Referring to the steps being taken to keep naxal activities in certain villages in the district bordering the neighbouring districts of Chikmagalur and Udupi under control, Mr. Chakravarthy said the Superintendents of Police of these districts would meet to take stock of the situation and discuss steps to keep such activities under check. He said 19 villages in the district had been identified by the district administration as being "safe haven" for naxals and security had been beefed up there. The Agumbe Police Outpost had been upgraded into a full-fledged police station as a large tract of land with naxal presence came under its jurisdiction.
