BANGALORE, NOV. 22. The information technology (IT) sector in Bangalore wants better infrastructure and so do facility managers. IFMA India, the Indian arm of the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), will work with the apex body of the IT software and services sector, the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), to facilitate infrastructure development. NASSCOM and IFMA India will leverage each other's expertise to develop programmes that will improve the quality of life and the workplace. Kiran Karnik, president of NASSCOM, said at "India Workspace 2004," which ended here last weekend, that facility managers should create a common expertise pool that could then be used by NASSCOM in its various recommendations.
Full-time course
IFMA India also announced that it was holding talks with various educational institutions to introduce facility management as a full-time course in their curriculum. This was expected to raise awareness about facility management as a career option among students. "Facility management has always been critical about the functioning of organisations and its importance is being recognised across industries today," Sanjeev Verma, acting-president, IFMA India, said. "Our new initiatives are aimed at making students (future practitioners) aware of the potential a career in facility management offers. It has benefits comparable to that of any other organisational function such as marketing or finance," he added. Paddy Menon, chairman emeritus, IFMA India, announced several initiatives. IFMA India would start a facility management practitioners' programme in which all stakeholders in facility management would be exposed to specialised areas. The courses would be conducted with the help of international facility management partners, he said.
