Government dithers, cancels yet another function

By our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, NOV. 22. Hot on the heels of the sudden cancellation of Press Day (November 19) celebrations, the Pondicherry administration cancelled another function scheduled for today.

The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, was to received from the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices the special postal cover and post card on Perunthalaivar Kamarajar at the Chamber of Commerce today.

However, it was cancelled for reasons that are still not clear.

Delay in formalities

Officials told The Hindu today that there was a problem regarding the formalities for the handing over of the postal cover, and this had led to the cancellation.

A new date would be announced soon, they added. The Pondicherry AIADMK secretary and MLA, A. Anbalagan, told newsmen today that such cancellations had become routine. He said the government would do well not to print and send out invitations if it was not sure of going ahead with scheduled functions.

Mr. Anbalagan recalled that he had gone to Hotel Seagulls for the Press Day function, expecting to address the gathering of presspersons.

On reaching the venue he was told that the function was cancelled.

This was an insult to the fourth estate, he said.
