Kargil should not be repeated: Fazlur Rehman

By Shujaat Bukhari

LAHORE, NOV. 22. Backing the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf's peace process with India, the chief of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) and Opposition leader in Pakistan, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has cautioned that there should be no `Kargils' and blame games should be stopped to prevent sabotage of the initiative.

"We want the dialogue to continue but there should be no new Kargil in the way," the Maulana told the concluding session of the Fourth South Asia Free Media Association regional conference here on Sunday evening.

Referring to the Lahore Declaration, signed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Nawaz Sharif, he said: "Two days earlier there were talks and two days later Kargil happened; this should not happen now." Whatever explanations Islamabad might give to justify the Kargil war, the fact was that it made Pakistan's intentions questionable and put the country on the defensive.

He said India and Pakistan should rise above the "typical blame game" and stop "scoring points."

"Kashmir is a national issue for Pakistan and we want its resolution in accordance with the U.N. Security Council resolutions," the Islamic cleric said. He, however, added: "We can talk something beyond plebiscite and try for a solution that would be equally acceptable to all the three parties — India, Pakistan and the people of Kashmir."

Advocating the dialogue process, the Maulana said: "Kashmir can be resolved by dialogue only and not bullets. The Kashmiri leadership should be involved in the talks. If not, they should be kept so close to the process that they know what is going on between the two countries."

He stressed dialogue at the political level and said that the process should not be left to bureaucrats. "Bureaucrats can't move beyond files and drawing lines. Politicians have the courage to explore new ways and paths."

Earlier, Aitzaz Hassan of the Pakistan People's Party, Mushahid Hussain of the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) and Tahmina Daultana of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) addressed the conference.
