`10,000 MW from n-reactors by 2012'

KOLKATA, NOV. 22. India's nuclear reactors are expected to be generating 10,000 MW of power by 2012, and double it eight years from then. The generation from the 14 reactors now in operation in the country is 2,720 MW which is expected to increase to 7,300 MW once the nine nuclear reactors now under construction are commissioned, the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission [AEC], Anil Kakodkar, said here today.

The country's first fast-breeder nuclear reactor in Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, which would initially generate 500 MW of nuclear power was expected to be ready by 2010.
