Centenary fete of Jain temple

KOCHI, NOV. 22. The Dharmanath Jain Temple will organise a three-day festival in December to celebrate its centenary year. The Governor, R.L. Bhatia, will be the chief guest for the valedictory session.

The installation of four deities at the renovated Chandraprabhu Jain Temple will be held as part of the festival. The 65-year-old temple has been renovated a cost of Rs. 65 lakhs.

Even though the celebrations will begin on December 8, the festival will start officially on December 11 and the valedictory meeting will be on December 13, said Pravin C. Shah, president of the Shree Cochin Swetamber Murtipujak Jain Sangh.

With the completion of 100 years, the temple would become the first Jain Thirath, managed by the Swetamber Sangh, he said. C.M. Dinesh Mani, Kochi Mayor, and V.K. Ibrahim Kunju, MLA, will also be present for the valedictory session.

The pooja would be led by Narendrabhai Nandu and Motisagarji Maharaj, both from Mumbai. A team of 31 people is coming from Mumbai. Among them would be artistes for performing Bhavana (special bhajans), he said. Bhavana will be held on all evenings.

During the celebrations, an idol of Goutham Swami, first disciple of Mahaveer, will also be installed. One of the highlights of the celebrations will be a colourful sobhayatra, featuring people in their traditional costumes and tableaux depicting Jain myths and art forms, on December 12. All the members of the Gujarati community in Kochi are expected to participate in the parade, Mr. Shah said.

Manikanth V. Khona, honorary secretary of the Sangh, Kishor Shamji, member, Bharat Navin Khona, convener of the festival and Jawahar Lalka, president of Cochin Gujarati Mahajan, were also present for the press conference.
