MYSORE, NOV. 22. The Minister for Public Works and Energy, H.D. Revanna, said here today that he had sought a meeting with the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the Transport Minister, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, over the problems created by overloaded lorries in the State. Speaking to presspersons, the Minister said that a high-level meeting of officials would be held shortly and the Public Works Department would seek a part of the amount collected by the RTOs as fine towards traffic-related offences. The meeting, he said, had been sought as several State highways and major district roads as well as bridges had become weak with lorries carrying loads over the prescribed limits. This was one of the reasons for the poor state of roads in Karnataka, he said. "Lorries from Bellary to Mangalore port have been carrying ore up to 40 tonnes whereas the prescribed load limit is only 15 tonnes. Nearly 1,000 loads arrive in Mangalore daily," he said.
