Plea to hike pension

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 22. The Kerala Vikalanga Sahaya Samithi has urged the State Government to increase the pension for the disabled to Rs.500 and clear the arrears.

The Samithi State president, Namadevan Thanur, told presspersons here today that the Government had not revised the pension for the last four decades and it remained Rs.110 a month. While fixing the pension, instead of considering the family income, the Government should take into account only the pension of the individual, he said.

The Government has not implemented the law for the protection of the disabled passed by the Union Government in 1955. Three per cent reservation for the disabled in Government jobs should be implemented with retrospective effect and all those who have been in Government service should be regularised. The benefits given to SC/ST should be extended to the disabled too, he said.

The regional offices of the Kerala State Handicapped Persons' Welfare Corporation should be opened at Ernakulam and Kozhikode. The disabled should be exempted from all taxes and seats should be reserved for disabled women in buses, he said.

The Samithi would stage a march to the Secretariat on Wednesday to press their charter of demands.
