Karunanidhi sees motives in arrest

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, NOV. 22. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, today attributed political and personal motives to the arrest and incarceration of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi.

"As far as [Chief Minister] Jayalalithaa is concerned, there is a background of vindictiveness. Both in [bandit] Veerappan's case and in the case of the Sankaracharya, there has been no explanation for some doubts raised," he told newspersons here.

Mr. Karunanidhi wanted to know why there was a two-month delay in the Acharya's arrest. "What happened during that period? What is the reason for the delay?" The Government would say that the delay was necessitated because of the investigation. But this could not be believed when one considered recent information that was available.

Asked if there was a political motive to the arrest, Mr. Karunanidhi said many personal issues were involved. It was now known that there were some "personal matters" between the Sankaracharya and the Chief Minister. "One cannot forget that," he said.

Also, there were many other murders, which the Government was sleeping over.

The DMK chief said he concurred with the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh's observation on the arrest and said the manner in which the police dealt with the Acharya was "too much." But it was for the courts to decide if the Acharya was guilty or not.

Recalling that the DMK had praised the killing of the forest brigand Veerappan and also the arrest of the Sankaracharya, he said the party had come to know that there was some background to both incidents.

The change in its stance was based on the information available now, he said but refused to elaborate on the nature of information.

On the Bharatiya Janata Party's agitation over the Kanchi Acharya's arrest, he said the BJP men were doing their duty but they should not use this to whip up communal passions.
