Farmers court arrest

CHANDIGARH, NOV. 22. Mounting pressure on the Punjab Government to accede to their various demands, several farmers owing allegiance to BKU (Ekta) and Kisan Sangarsh Samiti today courted arrest and staged demonstrations in five districts of the State.

However, police sources said here that no untoward major incident was reported from any part of the state in the wake of large scale security arrangement made by the administration.

BKU (E) general secretary Sukhdev Singh said over phone that over 2000 farmers courted arrests in districts of Bathinda, Mansa, Moga, Sangrur and Amritsar. Flaying the Amarinder Singh Government for adopting "autocratic" methods on the peaceful demonstrators, he said that police did not allowed scores of farmers to move out from their villages in some districts. He alleged that democratic and constitutional rights of the farmers were suppressed by the State Government. "We are not even allowed to raise our voice in a peaceful manner," he added.

Giving details, he said among others 250 farmers courted arrest in Nagala, 175 in Tolawal and 300 in Jakhpal villages falling in Sangrur district. He said that around 700 farmers courted arrest in Amritsar district and over 500 peasants in around 100 villages in Moga, Bathinda, Mansa, Sangrur and Tarn Taran were not allowed to come out of their houses.
