Prevent attacks on Christians, official urged

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, NOV. 22. A large number of Christians from various educational and religious institutions,<149> youth and social organisations on Monday submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Arvind Shrivastava, here urging him to take steps to prevent "attacks" on Christians in the district.

A delegation led by the former MLC, Octavia Albuquerque, apprised the Deputy Commissioner of the incidents that took place in the district in the past two years.

She likened them to "systematic attacks" unleashed by some fundamental organisations against churches and other places belonging to Christians in the district.

Charge against police

Alleging that miscreants had desecrated the Rosario, Milagres and Bejai churches and a security guard of the Modancarp Church at Bu<149>ntwal had been murdered, Ms. Albuquerque claimed though complaints had been registered, the police had not taken any action.

The reply from the Police Department was that it was facing a shortage of staff, she added.

She said it was time that the district administration and the police took steps to curb the activities of anti-social elements.

Mr. Shrivastava said Christians in the district need not consider helpless and promised them all support.

Appeal

He said that he had appealed to the State Minority Commission to empower him to constitute a special minority committee for Dakshina Kannada. He had suggested names of some persons to be on the committee, which would have to be cleared by the commission. Once the committee was in place, it would be easier to initiate action to prevent such incidents.

The Deputy Commissioner said that he would speak to the Superintendent of Police and find out <149>ways to put an end to the activities of anti-social elements in the district.
