Udupi
By Our Staff Correspondent
UDUPI, NOV. 22. The bandh call given by the Sangh Parivar organisations on Monday in protest against the arrest of the Kanchi Acharya passed off peacefully in Udupi district barring stray incidents of violence. The response to the bandh was near total in the district. The main streets of Udupi city wore a deserted look. Private and government buses were off the roads. The normally busy City and Service Bus Stands were empty. Schools and colleges remained closed. There was a clash between the workers of Congress and a Sangh Parivar outfit at Kadiyali in the city, when the workers belonging to the Sangh Parivar outfit tried to ransack a hotel. The police had to resort to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. The Udupi Town Police arrested three persons in this connection. The activists of the Sangh Parivar stopped the screening of a film at a cinema. There were clashes between workers of Congress and a Sangh Parivar outfit at Hebri in Karkala taluk. Trouble erupted there after the Bajrang Dal workers tried to shut a phone booth. The police then brought the situation under control. The bandh was peaceful in Kundapur and Karkala towns.
