Stray incidents mark VHP bandh call

COIMBATORE, NOV. 22. The bandh call given by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and various Hindu outfits to protest the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, passed off peacefully, except for stray incidents of stoning buses in Tirupur and Coimbatore.

Cases registered

According to police, two buses were stoned in the hosiery town of Tirupur one at Pichampalayampudur and near the Tirupur busstand in the morning. The Tirupur police have registered cases against 12 persons in this connection under the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Public Properties Prevention of Damages Act (TNPPD). Of the 12 against whom cases had been registered, the police have arrested six and have remanded them to custody while the hunt continues for the remaining six.

In Coimbatore City, two motorcycle borne miscreants threw stones at a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) town bus on Avarampalayam Road in which the windshield was damaged.

The two have been arrested later and the Race Course Police have registered a case. In the afternoon, two more town buses were stoned on Avanashi Road near Nava India.

The Police have launched a manhunt.

The police removed the activists who attempted to stage demonstration defying the denial of permission and regulatory orders.

Released

As many as 104, including seven women, were removed in Coimbatore City while 26 in Avanashi, 47 in Mettuppalayam and 55 in Pollachi were removed "in a bid to prevent breach of public peace" under section 151 of CrPC. All those removed were later released in the evening.

Activists of Adhi-Tamizhar Peravai, who threatened to burn the Kanchi seer in effigy in Pollachi town was also removed by the police.
