RTA meeting to discuss Vypeen buses' issue

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, NOV. 22. The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) meeting on Tuesday will discuss whether to permit buses from Vypeen into the city.

The District Collector, A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, said that the bus route committee would reach a consensus on the issue within a week and a final decision would be taken before the subsequent RTA meeting. The civic chiefs of Vypeen; M A Kuttappan, MLA; the RTO and representatives of private bus operators are members of the committee.

Mr. Hanish said that a decision would soon be taken on increasing the number of buses, which ply up to the Vypeen bus stand. As of now only one bus plies to the Vypeen stand, while three buses ply to the city. There is also a plan to introduce shuttle bus service from Njarakkal to the city. Bus services will also be started to Panambukad on Vallarpadom Island.

Council demand

The chairman of the Goshree Action Council, Majnu Komath, said that commuters, particularly women and children were facing undue hardship because of buses from Vypeen terminating service at the railway canal bridge, adjacent to the Kerala High Court.

He reminded that according to an estimate prepared a year ago, there was deficiency of 100 private buses on city routes. Buses from Vypeen are not being allowed into the city, despite their inadequate number.

The contention that they will increase traffic congestion in the city cannot be accepted.

The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, had stated a month ago that urgent measures would be taken to allow buses from Vypeen into the city.

With the railway canal bridge being certified as safe for heavy vehicles, the authorities must take steps to extend bus services to the city, Mr. Komath said.
