This Day That Age
The Madras City Council on November 23 unanimously elected Mr. M.A. Chidambaram as its Mayor for 1954-55. According to the convention governing the election, it is the turn of a non-Brahmin Hindu councillor to be elected to this office this year and at a meeting of the councillors and aldermen belonging to the community held for the purpose on November 19 Mr. Chidambaram's name was unanimously accepted for the Mayoralty. Mr. Chidambaram has been the President of the Southern India Chamber of Commerce from 1951 and represents that body in the City Council. He is 36 and is the third and youngest son of the late Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar of Chettinad and brother of Raja Sir M.A. Muthiah Chettiar and Mr. R. Ramanathan Chettiar, both of whom have held this office. Mr. Chidambaram has travelled widely in the Continent, America and Japan.
