Anti-social elements blamed for Haliyal violence

BANGALORE,
NOV. 23.
R.V. Deshpande, Congress MLA and former minister, has blamed anti-social elements for the reported violence in Haliyal in Uttara Kannada district over the non-release of crop insurance to farmers for last year.
Mr. Deshpande, who represents Haliyal in the Legislative Assembly, said he had been making efforts to get insurance amounts released to farmers for 2003-04. He always supported the just demands of farmers. They had received the insurance amount in the past five years. It was natural for farmers to be upset over such issues. But some anti-social elements had taken advantage of the situation, causing damage to public and private property in his constituency, Mr. Deshpande added.
