SINDHANOOR (RAICHUR DT.), NOV. 23. The Minister for Agriculture, K. Srinivasa Gowda, said on Monday that the Government was committed to the upliftment of farmers. He was speaking after releasing a document on the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) variety of paddy at a function in Sindhanoor town on Monday. He said that the Krishnarajasagar and the Tungabhadra irrigation projects had helped improve the agricultural economy of the respective regions. However, water was being wasted as farmers lacked knowledge in utilising it for irrigation, he said. Mr. Gowda said that a majority of farmers had adopted heavy irrigation to cultivate paddy on a large scale. This had caused the land to become saline. He said that farmers should adopt scientific methods and cultivate new high-yield crops to ensure faster development of the agricultural economy. He said that experts had researched the cultivation of the SRI variety and approved its cultivation on a large scale. The new variety had a higher yield and required less water. The cost of cultivation was also less when compared to other varieties of paddy.
Farm loans
Expressing displeasure over the indifference of some nationalised banks in extending farm loans, he said that a majority of nationalised financial institutions charged higher interest rates while extending agricultural loans. Farmers had to depend on cooperative banks and societies to get financial assistance. The Government had decided to strengthen these sectors so as to extend finance to farmers at lower interest. At the same time, the Government had decided to set a support price for all agricultural produce to protect the farmers, he said. K. Veeerupakshappa, Koppal MP, said that the Tungabhadra Dam had a high storage level this year owing to good rainfall. He said that the Government had decided to maintain water supply in the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal till December 15 to protect the kharif crop. Senior political leaders and legislators were present.
