Topno's golden goal for BSF

NEW DELHI, NOV. 23. Habil Topno scored the `golden goal' for the Border Security Force (BSF) in the fifth minute of extra time as it beat Punjab and Sind Bank after they were locked 2-2 in regulation time in the quarterfinals of the Nehru hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Tuesday.

BSF will meet Indian Oil in one of the semifinals on Wednesday. Indian Oil trounced South Central Railway (Secunderabad) 5-0 in the first match on Tuesday. In the other semifinal, Punjab Police will take on Bharat Petroleum.

Sushil Kujur's spurt down the right flank took him deep into the rival circle and his flick struck the goalkeeper's pad and was about to roll in when Topno ensured the match-winner. PSB protested, but in vain.Marinus Lakra scored for BSF in the 11th minute and John Jojo converted a penalty corner in the 29th minute to put the paramilitary team two up. Navpreet Singh converted a penalty corner in the 32nd minute for PSB. Off the next penalty corner, Jatinderpal's flick hit an onrushing defender's stick and deflected towards the `pusher' Ajitpal Singh, who tapped home (2-2).

Not unexpectedly, Indian Oil made light of South Central Railway's challenge in the other match. Prabhjot Singh was in fine form. His goals came in the 22nd and 32nd minutes, the second off a penalty stroke. Hamza added two more, one on either side of the interval, while Thakur scored one. — Our Special Correspondent
