Rotary delegates visit schools

SALEM, NOV. 23. A team of delegates from the Rotary International today inspected various welfare projects undertaken by Rotarians in and around Salem.

A group of 21 delegates from Australia, Denmark, Brazil and the US visited various project sites and also evaluated the Pulse Polio immunisation programme in the region. After participating in the immunisation campaign at Kumbakonam two days back, the team members arrived here.

They were given a warm and traditional welcome. They visited the Guhai Government Higher Secondary School today where various projects had been undertaken with the help of Rotarians. About 3,000 students assembled before the school and greeted the team members.

At a simple function presided over by the former Rotary governor, P.V. Purushothaman, the delegates offered felicitations. The Assistant Headmaster, C. Sundararaju, and the district governor-elect, Velayutha Ravindran, also took part. The school had established a computer centre with the aid from the Rotary Clubs of Canada and a laboratory sponsored by the Rotary Club of Johannesburg. Furniture for 10 classrooms was donated by Rotary Club of Trenton in Canada. Rotary Club of York in the US extended their help in building a toilet block for the girl students of the school.

Later the team also visited the Ammapet HSS where the Rotary Clubs had donated Rs. 30 lakhs for various projects. They also visited the Ammapet Girls HSS and later the Government Women College where the Rotary Club of Salem Mid Town had provided computers.
