ERODE, NOV. 23. As many as 3,650 temples under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department were renovated in three-and-a-half years, the HR&CE Minister, P.C. Ramasamy, said. Inaugurating the construction of rajagopuram at the Sri Badrakaliamman Temple in Anthiyur today, he said that before the end of March 2005, another 150 temples would be renovated. Kumbabishegams would be performed in all the temples once in 12 years. The Minister said that all the temples in the State under the HR&CE Department had a total of 7.49 lakh acres of their own. In Erode, temples had a total area of 16,331 acres. The Anthiyur Sri Badrakaliamman Temple owned 4.72 acres with a deposit of Rs. 25.80 lakhs. The rajagopuram would be built at a cost of Rs. 1.50 crores.
Annadanam
The HR&CE Department had deposited Rs. 430 crores and with the interest on the amount, annadanam was being performed in temples in poor financial condition. Annadanam scheme was implemented in 171 temples in the State. Mr. Ramasamy said that 600 tanks in the temples were desilted and now due to heavy rain, the tanks had sufficient water. Four colleges and 40 schools run by the HR&CE Department were functioning efficiently. Speaking at the function, the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, said that the Anthiyur Sri Badrakaliamman Temple was built during the 13th century and every year Kundam (fire walking) was conducted. The Superintendent of Police, P. Balasubramanian; Koonampatty Adhenam, Rajalinga Manickka Vasagar; Rajya Sabha MP, N.R. Govindarajar; MLAs S.S. Ramanidharan, P. Chidambaram; and the SIDCO Chairman, Sindu Ravichandran, spoke.
