TIRUCHI, NOV. 23. The Tiruchi District Central Co-operative Bank has registered a record turnover of Rs. 1,000 crores till October. The bank, which earned a profit of Rs. 11.89 crores during the current fiscal, has started diversifying its credit portfolio. It has been providing credit linkage to agriculture and allied activities till recently when it started funding non-farming activities. It has sanctioned Rs. 351.90 crores for promoting the latter. An official release from the bank issued here on Friday said the recovery of short-term crop loans disbursed during 2003-04 stood at Rs. 26.74 crores after effecting a waiver of interest and penal interest up to Rs. 2.60 crores following the State Government's directive. In all, 14,841 farmers have benefited from the scheme. The bank has disbursed loans of Rs. 1.48 crores for the uplift of the economically weaker sections with a special focus on women. A large number of women self-help groups have benefited. Pregnant women were given maternity loans and entrepreneurship among women was promoted. The bank has bagged the first prize instituted by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) for 2001-02 and 2002-03 for sanctioning maximum credit to self-help groups among the District Central Co-operative Banks in the State. The century-old bank also received the `Best District Central Cooperative Bank' award from the NABARD and was adjudged as the best among District Central Cooperative Banks in Tamil Nadu by the Tamil Nadu State Cooperative Bank during 2000-01.
