NEW DELHI, NOV. 23. The United States said today that terrorists could be planning attacks on U.S. interests in New Delhi and Mumbai, an announcement posted on the American Embassy's website stressed. "Based on information received by the U.S. Government, terrorists may be planning attacks on U.S. interests in India in the near future. Although not specific, the information suggests that an attack could be aimed at U.S. interests in the cities of New Delhi or Mumbai (Bombay)," it said. "Facilities associated with the U.S. or locations where U.S. citizens and other foreigners congregate or visit, including residential areas, business offices, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, hotels and public areas, could be targeted. U.S. citizens are encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security." The consular section and the Information Resource Centre at the American Center in Mumbai remained closed to the public today due to these security concerns. Consular sections at the Embassy in New Delhi and the Consulates-General in Chennai and Calcutta, however, remained open.
