NEW DELHI, NOV. 23. The Centre is planning to introduce a new scheme for setting up desalination plants for drinking water supply in coastal urban areas as envisaged in the national common minimum programme. Proposals for setting up desalination plants have been invited from Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. The Orissa Government has identified three towns Puri, Konark and Gopalpur while Andhra Pradesh is in the process of preparing a project report for installation of desalination plants of 1.5 mld capacity in Bhimunipatnam. The Union Territory of Pondicherry has identified Muthialpet to provide a desalination plant for Rs 13.50 crore. Tamil Nadu has identified Keelakarai, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvottiyur, Kathivakkam, Ambattur and Madavaram. The Government is also actively considering setting up a Rs. 1,000 crore desalination plant in Chennai as announced by the Union Finance Minister in his budget speech.
