Rajasthan
By Our Special Correspondent
JAIPUR, NOV. 23 . Rajasthan has reasons to feel threatened as a favourite destination for international tourists going by the recent trends. Its growth rate in the arrival of foreign tourists does not compare well with those of the newly popular destinations like Kerala which registered a growth of over 26 per cent in this category in 2003 against its own, 3.28 per cent. A report by the Confederation of Indian Industry on tourism potential in Rajasthan, released by the State Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje, on the occasion of last week's international conference here on "India:Tourism and heritage'' talks about the State losing its market share to both domestic and international destinations. The declining trend is in the whole of northern India. The report cites a recent study which found that the share of northern region tourism falling markedly from 70 per cent in 1980 to 49 per cent in 2003. Internationally, the neighbouring countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Dubai, China and Maldives are increasingly becoming popular with tourists and are garnering higher market share. As far as Rajasthan is concerned tourism is the key driver of the State's economy. It accounts for 13 per cent of the net State Domestic Product. The sector provides the second largest direct and indirect employment in Rajasthan after agriculture. Analyzing the current and expected trends in tourism in India, the CII report notes that the Governments across the world had been very proactive in developing the sector and Rajasthan should learn from their practices and experiences. Two national destinations, Kerala and Goa and four international destinations -- Britain, Dubai, Malaysia and Singapore -- were studied by CII in Rajasthan's context, for future action.
