Top leaders to attend martyrdom tercentennial

By Our Staff Correspondent

CHANDIGARH, NOV. 23. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and the Chairperson of the ruling UPA, Sonia Gandhi, have accepted the Punjab Government's invitation to attend functions related to the 300th anniversary of martyrdom of the mother and four Sahibzadas (sons) of the 10th pontiff of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, next month.

According to a senior officer of the Chief Minister's Office, the leaders have conveyed their tentative programmes to participate in the ceremonies associated with the extremely emotional tercentennial for the Sikh community. The Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh, presided over a series of meetings recently, with his Ministerial colleagues and senior officers, to monitor the preparations for the events.

The Guru's two elder Sahibzadas, Baba Ajit Singh and Baba Jujhar Singh, attained martyrdom in the battlefield while fighting Mughal forces at the place where now stands the township of Chamkaur Sahib in Ropar district, 30 km from here.

The younger Sahibzadas, who were minors, Baba Fateh Singh and Baba Zorawar Singh, were buried alive when they refused to accept religious conversion at the instance of the local Mughal Governor, Wazir Khan. Along with them their grandmother, Mata Gujari, also attained martyrdom in Sirhind, which now falls in Fatehgarh Sahib district, 40 km from here.

According to the tentative schedule that has been received in the Punjab CMO, Ms. Gandhi would participate in the commemorative function at Chamkaur Sahib on December 20, while Mr. Kalam and Dr. Manmohan Singh would join the functions on December 25 and 24, respectively, at Fatehgarh Sahib. Traditionally Jor Melas are organised to mark these events.
