KANNUR, NOV. 23. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, has said that the long-pending proposal for an airport in Kannur will be taken up for discussion in the Cabinet, as people's representatives and political leaders in the district have unanimously raised the proposed project. Speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of his mass contact programme here today, the Chief Minister said that the proposed airport project was raised at the meetings with the MLAs in the district and later with United Democratic Front leaders.
Land acquisitions
He also said the land acquisitions for the Central Government-aided projects under the Textile Centre Infrastructure Development Scheme were already under way. The State Government had fulfilled its formalities for ensuring the Rs. 12-crore handloom development scheme for Kannur under the Swarna Jayanthi Swarozgar Yojna. The State Government-level initiatives required for making Kannur a town of export excellence under Central Government programmes would be completed, he said. The Government would also consider the proposal for acquiring 5 acres of land for setting up a container freight station here, Mr. Chandy added.
Sick units
The Government would also examine the issue of reviving sick and closed industrial units in the district, Mr. Chandy said. The demand for shifting the headquarters of Kannur University to a place closer to the town would also be considered, he added. The Chief Minister also said that the District Collector had been asked to submit a report on the formalities to be initiated by the Government to fulfil its commitment to complete the remaining infrastructure facilities for the Naval Academy project coming up at Ezhimala. Mr. Chandy said that his primary concern as Chief Minister was to address problems being faced by the common people. He said he was not interested to drag himself into controversies. The chance he got to serve the people would be utilised for helping the poor, he said adding that he was getting the public's support for his efforts.
