KSRTC exempted from strike

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Nov. 23. The joint action council of motor transport workers have decided to exempt the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) from the purview of the dawn-to-desk strike on Wednesday. In a statement here today, the action council leader and the Kerala State Private Motor Workers' Federation secretary, Pattom Sasidharan, said there would also be no attacks on private vehicles during the day. He appealed to all sections of people to cooperate with the strike by not taking out two-wheelers and other motor vehicles. Besides KSRTC, milk supply and newspapers would also be exempt from the strike, he said.

PSC rank-holders' demand

The State committee members of the All-Kerala PSC Rank-Holders' Association staged a sit-in before the Secretariat today demanding the extension of the validity of the old rank lists of posts to which appointments were not made systematically in the past because of the recruitment ban, if new rank lists had not been published. The association president, R. Satheesh Kumar, who inaugurated the protest, urged the Government and the Public Service Commission to speed up the appointments from the rank lists.

CDS exam results

The final results of the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination (I) 2004, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), have been published. It is available for reference at the Press Information Bureau office, Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram. It is also available on the UPSC website at www.upsc.gov.in.

Grievance redressal

The Department of Posts has invited complaints, if any, from the public pertaining to banking, mail, counter or any other service. They are to be sent to the Superintendent of Post Offices of the postal division concerned. Complaints can also be registered through the website www.indiapost.org. Customer Care Centres are open on all working days at all Head Post Offices and Divisional Offices. In case of any suspicion of corruption, the customer can directly approach the Assistant Postmaster General (Vigilance), Office of the Chief Postmaster General, Thiruvananthapuram - 695 033, or call telephone number 0471-2302721.

Admit cards sent

The office of the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations has sent admit cards to all candidates eligible to write the entrance test for the MD Ayurveda programme (2004-05), which will be held on Saturday in Thiruvananthapuram. Candidates who do not get the admit card or the rejection memo before November 25 can get the `identification certificate' in person from the liaison officer at the office of the CEE on November 26, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Candidates can use this certificate in place of the admit card. Such candidates should meet the chief superintendent of the examination centre in person before 9 a.m. on the day of the examination, a press note issued here today said.

Penal interest to be waived

The State Cooperative Bank has decided to waive the penal interest for those who clear their loans arrears before December 31. This was announced here today by the managing director of the bank.

CEC's visit

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), T.S. Krishnamoorthy, will be here tomorrow. He is arriving by the Chennai flight. He will leave for Nagercoil by 10 p.m.

Lok Sabha Speaker's visit

The Lok Sabha Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee, is coming to Kozhikode tomorrow. He will leave for Chennai the next morning.

Medical college inauguration

The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, will inaugurate the medical college set up at Perintalmanna in Malappuram district by the Muslim Educational Society (MES) and ancillary medical institutions. Ministers from the Centre and the State, representatives from other countries and educationists will attend the function. A meeting of the State office-bearers, standing committee chairman and district presidents of the MES held in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday also decided to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the organisation in a befitting way in February.

Cine exhibitors' protest

KOCHI NOV. 23. The Kerala Cine Exhibitors Association has protested against several municipalities and panchayats in the State refusing to reduce the rate of entertainment tax despite a Government order. Most of the civic bodies have not responded to the requests made by theatre owners and the Government should ask these bodies to reduce the tax rates, said Sherif Kottarakara, State general secretary of the association.

Paper on Bharathapuzha

The Kerala Nadeethada-Jala Samrakshana Samiti will bring out a preliminary paper on the study of the Bharathapuzha in the first week of December. This was decided at a meeting of the Samiti held here today. E. Balanandan, former MP, presided over the meeting.

Vellappally's charge

Vellappally Natesan, general secretary of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam, has alleged that there were deliberate attempts to drag the Advocate General (AG) into controversies. Of the 18 AGs so far, only three belonged to the Ezhava community. The appointment of community members to the post was viewed with intolerance by certain interest groups. Through the appointment of Ratna Singh, the UDF Government corrected the injustice meted out to the community by previous Governments, he said. He alleged that there were conspiracies to oust Mr. Ratna Singh by turning a blind eye to the mistakes committed by the Director General of Prosecution in handling the ice-cream parlour sex scandal case.

Power theft detected

KOLLAM NOV. 23. The anti-power theft squad of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) yesterday detected a massive power theft by a restaurant at Kundara. As per a notice issued to the restauarant today, the theft is estimated at Rs. 2.75 lakhs. The squad had arrived from Thiruvananthapuram following a tip-off. The restaurant is situated in the vicinity of the Kundara KSEB office.

RYF to take

out march

PATHANAMTHITTA NOV. 23. The Revolutionary Youth Front (RYF) will organise a Parliament march on December 1 in protest against the alleged anti-youth and employment policies of the Union Government. In a statement here today, the RYF State secretary, Saleem P. Chacko, said that the march was to press the Government to take steps to ensure employment guarantee to unemployed youth.

Level-crossings

to be closed

KOZHIKODE NOV. 23. Some railway level-crosses in the district will be closed down on November 24, November 30 and December 5 due to repair work. The Nandi railway level-cross will be shut down from 8 p.m. on November 24 to 5 a.m. on November 25; the Kollam railway level-cross from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on November 30 and the Pookode level-cross from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on December 8, a Public Relations Department release said here today.

Philosophy conference

The fifth State conference of the Kerala Philosophy Association will be held at the Calicut University seminar complex on November 25. M.P.Veerendrakumar, MP, will inaugurate the conference being hosted by the University Philosophy Department. U.R.Ananthamurthy, noted academician and former Vice Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi University, will deliver the keynote address.

German course

Six students who successfully completed a course in German language conducted by the Indo-German Society, Kozhikode, were awarded certificates by Barbara Riedel, an anthropologist from Germany, at a function held at the Malabar Christian College on Monday. Usha Krishnamoorthy of the Indian Overseas Bank was the topper in the examination.

RSP(B) demand

KASARAGOD NOV. 23. The Revolutionary Socialist Party of Kerala (Bolshevik) has demanded the resignation of the Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran. At a press conference here today, the party district secretary, V. Sasidharan, said the Minister had no moral right to continue in the post as a nominee of the party.

Exam postponed

KOTTAYAM NOV. 23. All examinations scheduled for Wednesday by the Mahatma Gandhi University have been postponed in view of the motor vehicle hartal, the authorities said. The new dates will be announced later.

Bus services to be resumed

THRISSUR NOV. 23. The Minister for Transport, N. Saktan, has announced that some of the suspended bus services from the Irinjalakuda depot of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation would be revived. He visited the bus depot on Tuesday. Mr. Saktan said a meeting would be convened at Thiruvananthapuram in December to discuss the development of the depot.

Workshop on dance

The Navaneetham Cultural Trust will hold a workshop on the dance forms of Rajasthan and Gujarat here from December 22 to 28. The workshop will be led by Avani Pandit, Shernik Pandit and Pankaj Parmar, says a press release. For details, contact the Trust at: 0487-2424455, 9447732090.

SFI wins

college polls The Students Federation of India (SFI) made a clean sweep in college elections held in the district.

In 11 out of 13 arts and science colleges, where party-based elections were held, the SFI emerged victorious. The colleges where the SFI lost were S. N. College, Nattika, and Vivekananda College, Kunnamkulam, according to a press release.
