By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, NOV. 23. Eight chapters of Ladies Circle India on Sunday signed a memorandum of understanding with the Rotary Club and contributed Rs. 15,000 each for the Club's Toilet Block Project.

Vinita Venkatesh, area officer, Ladies Circle India, said this was the first area-level tie-up with the Rotary Club and the Round Table movement. The Ladies Circle movement, affiliated to Ladies Circle international, is 36 years old and affiliated to Ladies Circle International, has 100 centres in India.

She said their project `educate to enlighten' focussed on infrastructure, hygiene, educational aids, human resource development for teachers and conduct of health camps. One hundred model schools had been identified for 2004-05 for these initiatives.

A.L. Chidambaram, adviser, Rotary District 3230, said that under its `schools into smiles' programme, over 1,000 schools had been identified of which 164 were short-listed.

Linesh Sanatkumar, Round Table area chairman, Area II, said the organisation had set a target of educating one million children worldwide by 2008.

In India, the project started in 1999 wherein 558 schools and three lakh children would be covered.

The present project has an outlay of Rs. 5 lakhs and infrastructure in nine schools in Chennai will be completed in four months.

Their `Freedom Through Education' project had been initiated in big cities in India and the Round Table was providing 35 per cent of the cost for 30 schools. Till December 15, the Round Table would collect contributions from non-resident Indians, coinciding with Thanksgiving in the United States.
